CRAZY PEOPLE.
They thought they had adopted a large puppy dog, but only realised two years later that they had welcomed a bear into their home.
This was a glaring oversight for a family living in a remote location in China, who were suspicious of the animal's insatiable appetite.
Su Yun, who lives in a village outside the city of Kunming in Yunnan province, bought what she was led to believe was a Tibetan mastiff cub while on holiday in 2016.
Within two years of adoption, Su Yun's pet had reached a weight of 114 kilograms and showed no signs of stopping its growth.
They thought they had adopted a large dog puppy, but only after two years did they realize they had welcomed a bear into their home. It was a glaring oversight for a family living in a remote location in China who were suspicious of the animal's insatiable appetite.
Su Yun, who lives in a village outside the city of Kunming in Yunnan Province (China), bought what she was led to believe was a Tibetan Mastiff puppy while on holiday in 2016. Male dogs of that breed, with their thick black and brown coats, can weigh up to 70 kilograms as adults.
The owner said she was immediately struck by her "hound's" insatiable appetite, which led it to devour a basket of fruit and two buckets of spaghetti a day. Within two years of adoption, Su Yun 's pet had reached a weight of 114 kilograms and showed no signs of stopping his growth.
Only when the "dog" began to walk on two legs did the family's amazement turn to alarm. "The more it grew, the more it looked like a bear," Su Yun told Chinese media. The cute story was first reported by the Independent in 2018, but this week it went viral again. An adult male Asian bear, also known as a Himalayan bear or moon bear, can weigh up to 180 kg.
The involvement of the authorities and the relocation of the bear.
The woman contacted authorities, who quickly identified her alleged dog as an Asiatic black bear, listed as an endangered species. The bear from Su Yun, which had been living in her home for that long, had to be sedated before being taken to Yunnan Wildlife Rescue because the staff who arrived to pick it up were too frightened to interact with the wild animal while it was fully alert.
