The largest volcano in the world has awakened after 38 years, it is the Mauna Loa

The world's largest active volcano, Hawaiian Mauna Loa, has erupted again for the first time in 38 years.

Lava flows remained mostly contained within the summit's huge caldera but the eruption could pose a threat to residents of nearby areas if conditions change.

The last eruption of the Mauna Loa dates back to March and April 1984, with lava flows reaching 8 km from the city of Hilo. They lasted 22 days and came up to seven kilometers from Hilo, a city in northeastern Hawaii, the largest island of the archipelago of the same name.

No alarm
For now, lava flows have remained contained within the huge caldera of the summit, without for now creating damage to things or people.

But be careful
But the eruption could pose a threat to residents of nearby areas if conditions change, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

What is the danger
If the eruption were to pass the walls of the summit caldera, lava flows could "move rapidly downward," the USGC said.
