The dynamics
As you can see from the images the Tesla Model S stops suddenly for no particular reason and right on the leftmost lane. Although the first cars manage to avoid the impact, the unexpected behavior of the Tesla triggers a chain collision involving eight vehicles.

The important detail
The driver told police he had used the new "Full Self-Driving" feature of Tesla. And the images therefore confirm the information from initial reports that the Tesla was advancing in traffic before changing lanes and braking for no specific reason.

Blame the "Full Self-Driving"?
All right? Of course not. Is anything wrong. And while the investigation into the accident is still ongoing, a hundred complaints to the NTSA (National Transport and Safety Authority) emerge in three months, on alleged "phantom braking" of the Tesla. And before the Bay Bridgeincident, the attention of the American press had focused on another incident. On November 18, in Ohio, in which a Tesla Model 3 had rear-ended, without any hint of braking, a vehicle of the Traffic Police. The NTSA determined that the vehicle was in autonomous driving mode, adding this case to the long list it is investigating.
