Shocking accident in the Edinburgh port: ship bends over quay, numerous injured

A major shipping accident has hit the port of Edinburgh, Scotland, leaving 35 people injured, some of them seriously. The ship Petrel, belonging to the US Navy, suddenly keeled over in the Leith shipyard, getting stuck on the quay.

Local authorities declared an emergency and urged the public not to go to hospitals except in an emergency.

It is suspected that incorrect manoeuvring and strong winds caused the accident. The ship, formerly owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is now operated by Oceaneering International and used to search for wrecks in deep waters.

What happened

Relief and assistance
Several rescue units arrived on the scene to assist the injured. A first aid station was set up at the Imperial Dock, while 23 people were transported to hospital, some of them by helicopter.

Local authorities declared a maxi emergency and urged citizens not to go to hospitals except in cases of immediate urgency. Outpatient appointments and scheduled surgeries have been canceled to free up staff.

Scotland Police is investigating to establish the full circumstances of the incident. A spokesman for Forth Ports revealed that the incident occurred at the Dales Marine Services facility, which operates the dry dock.

The Petrel ship and its history
The Petrel, 76 meters long, was previously owned by the co-founder of Microsoft Paul Allen. Since 2022, it has been owned by the United States Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center and operated by Oceaneering International. The ship has been used for deep-water search of shipwrecks and is equipped for specialized searches.
