Narco-sub spotted in Spain, narcos' submarines are now a threat

A new narco-sub was spotted in Spain, off the Vilagarcia area in Galicia. It was spotted by a fisherman who then raised the alarm, triggering the intervention of patrol boats in rather rough waters.

The vessel was semi-submerged in a perpendicular position and in fact only the bow was sticking out. It is unclear whether it was abandoned or had some navigation problems.

Narcos submarines, also called narco-subs, are small submarines built by traffickers to smuggle drugs. They are particularly notorious for being used by Colombian cartel members to export narcotics from Colombia to Mexico. But this is the third incident to occur off the coast of Spain.

The investigations
Investigative sources do not rule out the possibility that there may be a connection to two inflatable boats, brand new and each propelled by three 300-hp engines, that were abandoned on a beach not far away a few weeks ago. They may have brought ashore the cargo of narcotics.

The 2019 case
The most egregious case in Galicia in 2019 when a narco-sub was stranded with a 3-ton cargo of narcotics. According to the investigation, it had departed from the Amazon, then crossed the Atlantic to Galicia, where it was supposed to "deliver" the cargo to a local network. About 20 meters long, it had three crewmen on board, all of whom were arrested. The incredible smuggling mission went badly due to bad weather conditions, technical problems, and a missed appointment with those who were supposed to act as "retrievers."

A real threat
Narco-subs are small submarines that usually proceed along the surface of the water, leaving the upper part of the hull and a small turret to emerge. Propulsion is provided by inboard or outboard engines. They are particularly notorious for being used by Colombian cartel members to export narcotics from Colombia to Mexico. The latest narco-submarines are fully submersible, specifically designed to be difficult to be visually detected by radar, sonar and infrared systems. By now a threat even to Europe.
