Remains of missing man found in shark's stomach, shock in Argentina

Diego Barría was a fisherman who went missing last Feb. 18 after going out for a ride on his off-road vehicle in the southern province of Chubut in Argentina.

The damaged off-road vehicle was located Feb. 20 on a beach near Rocas Coloradas, but there was no sign of Barría and an intense search began to try to locate the father of three.

Then the dramatic discovery. The remains of Diego Barria, 32, were found by accident in the stomach of a shark caught by two local fishermen.

The family of Diego Barría recognized the poor fisherman's body thanks to a clearly recognizable tattoo. This is what Daniela Millatruz, the law enforcement officer in charge of the search, told local media.

We are in Chubut in southern Argentina.
Diego Barría was a fisherman who disappeared last Feb. 18 after going out for a ride on his all-terrain vehicle in the southern province of Chubut in Argentina. Barría, married and father of three children, had last been seen shortly before midnight that day on his way back to his country home.

The disappearance
Barria along the way  had stopped to say hello to some fishermen friends and had phoned his wife saying he was a little late. However, he never returned home that night or the next night.

The police report
The man also did not respond to any text messages or return phone calls. Having not heard from him for two days, his relatives decided to contact the police to report him as a missing person.

The research
Local police officers began searching the area where he was lost and after 40 hours located his severely damaged quad. A little further away his helmet, which was broken in two, was found. The body of Barría, however, was missing.

The tragic finding
Then the dramatic discovery. The remains of Diego Barria, 32, were found by accident in the stomach of a shark caught by two local fishermen (there were three sharks in all) off a beach in Rocas Coloradas (pictured). The family of Diego Barría recognized the poor man's body thanks to a clearly recognizable tattoo. This is what Daniela Millatruz, the law enforcement officer in charge of the search, told local media.

Investigation kicks off
The remains will also undergo DNA testing to officially confirm that they belong to Diego Barría, said Cristian Ansaldo, head of the city police department in Comodoro Rivadavia, in an interview with local media. The main hypothesis of investigators is that Barrìa fell into the water by accident, perhaps dragged by the strong tide of the hours when it disappeared. At that point the shark (five feet long and belonging to a species that does not normally attack humans) would have fed on his body.
