Maxi-chain pileup on highway, the absurd collision between 50 vehicles

A freeway pileup involving nearly 50 vehicles killed 16 people and injured dozens near Changsha, capital of China's Hunan province, on Saturday evening, prompting the mobilization of nearly 200 emergency responders.

The accidents also left 66 people injured, eight of whom were seriously injured but in stable condition for the time being. All of the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management says it has called for an investigation into the cause of the accident during the country's busiest transportation season.

Nearly 200 rescuers on the scene of the accident
Footage republished online by the state-owned People's Daily showed burning trucks and smashed cars from multiple collisions that occurred in the span of just 10 minutes, "with some vehicles catching fire," the local highway police reported in a statement. Nearly 200 emergency responders were involved.

Stricter rules in China
Serious traffic accidents, often caused by fatigued drivers and poorly maintained or overloaded vehicles, used to be common in China, but in recent years stricter regulations have reduced their frequency.
