Why was it chosen to move the capital
The desire to relocate the Indonesian capital was dictated above all by the fact that Jakarta, currently home to more than 30 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, has suffered so many severe infrastructure problems and flooding that experts claim that by 2050 one third of the city could be covered by water.

Environmentalists' concern
Environmentalists are particularly concerned about the construction of the new capital. It is predicted that the forest area could shrink by 12% before 2050 and that several animal species such as Bornean orangutans and nasal monkeys could be reduced by a third.
