Tragedy in Taiwan: crane boom collapses and crashes on subway

Taipei. A crane collapsed around noon (local time) today (10 May) on top of a moving train from the Taichung Metro Green Line, killing one passenger and injuring eight. It fell from the top of a building on a moving train of the Taichung Green Line MRT near Feng-le Park station.

When the crane hit the train, it ripped into the side, tearing metal plates, breaking window panes and sending some seats flying. The front of the train was also badly damaged.

Police said that among the eight injured passengers were two primary school students whose feet were cut by falling glass. A foreign national was admitted to a nearby hospital after suffering lacerations to his head.

A woman died
The passenger who died was a 52-year-old woman nicknamed Lin who was trapped under the carriage when the accident occurred.

No sign of life
When first responders managed to extricate the woman from under the carriage, they discovered that she had suffered a severe head injury and showed no vital signs.

The causes of death
Taichung firefighters said that when the train was still moving, the crane collapsed and the woman was pushed out of the carriage, causing her to be crushed under the train
