Surprising in Japan, discovered a flower that looks like glass

A new species of orchid has been discovered in Japan. It is beautiful and its flowers, so fragile and delicate, seem to have petals almost made of glass.

The new orchid, called Spiranthes Hachijoensis, has truly extraordinary characteristics. Its flowers, fragile and delicate, range in colour from off-white to pink and, above all, when seen close up, they really do look as if they are almost made of glass.

Spiranthes are also called 'women's tresses' due to their resemblance to locks of hair and have a central stem around which an ascending spiral of tiny bell-shaped flowers grows.

Thousands of dead fish in Australia, the sad phenomenon is also linked to climate change

A sad phenomenon has struck the Australian outback. Thousands of dead fish washed up on the shores of the lake in the town of Menindee.

The phenomenon was caused by flooding in the area, but also by a heat wave. The death of the fish seems to be mainly related to low oxygen levels in the water as the floods receded.

In addition, the water retains less oxygen because it is warmer, thus not allowing the fish - especially cod and perch - to breathe.

Germany: Greenpeace activists protest against the German position on a ban on the sale of combustion engine cars in the EU

The whole of Europe is currently debating what to do and what strategies to adopt to cope with the increasingly evident climate change. Last month, the European Commission presented a proposal to ban the production of combustion-engine cars from 2035 onwards, while allowing cars already registered to circulate.

This choice was designed to focus more on electric cars, and was welcomed by almost all member states (Italy one of the only ones initially against). After an initial assent, however, even Germany has turned back, convinced that electric vehicles are not the only way to make wheeled transport less polluting.

Needless to say, this change of direction has been received badly by environmental associations, starting with Greenpeace, which staged an unusual and incisive protest on 22 March.

Identifying more than 100,000 missing persons, Colombia tries

According to the Unit for the Search of Missing Persons (UBPD), there are more than 100,000 people missing after decades of conflict in Colombia. The Forensic Medicine Service is in charge of identifying human remains that arrive from the country's cemeteries to the institute, following strict international protocols.

The identification process includes comparing DNA samples with the more than 60,000 records of people searching for their relatives stored in "Banco de Perfiles Geneticos de Desaparecidos" (Bank of Genetic Profiles of the Disappeared).

Adding to the obstacle posed by the passage of time is one of the peculiarities of the Colombian conflict: the mutilation of victims by perpetrators to erase the traces of their crimes.

Narco-sub spotted in Spain, narcos' submarines are now a threat

A new narco-sub was spotted in Spain, off the Vilagarcia area in Galicia. It was spotted by a fisherman who then raised the alarm, triggering the intervention of patrol boats in rather rough waters.

The vessel was semi-submerged in a perpendicular position and in fact only the bow was sticking out. It is unclear whether it was abandoned or had some navigation problems.

Narcos submarines, also called narco-subs, are small submarines built by traffickers to smuggle drugs. They are particularly notorious for being used by Colombian cartel members to export narcotics from Colombia to Mexico. But this is the third incident to occur off the coast of Spain.
