Water found in the plateau of Cariadeghe: incredible discovery of speleologists

Water is becoming a growing problem for our world. Its scarcity and the droughts caused by climate change make it necessary to find new accessible water sources even for communities living in isolated and hard-to-reach places such as mountains and plateaus.

The group of speleologists Underland announced that after four years of studies, they have found water sources under the plateau of Cariadeghe, in the province of Brescia (Italy). They have been exploring the caves and 'omber', the caves of the Serle underground for some time.

The result was achieved with an innovative method, studying the air variations that can be felt inside the caves. Now the hard work will be to locate the exact spot and figure out how to extract the precious 'blue gold'.

Water found in the plateau of Cariadeghe (Italy): incredible discovery of speleologists
A water reservoir has been found in the caves of the Cariadeghe plateau in Serle (Brescia, Italy), a karstic area that, due to its difficult location, has always had problems with water reserves, forcing it to be pumped uphill from the lower municipalities.

The plateau is also famous for its geomorphological features. Being a karstic terrain, it has many interesting caves, once used as iceboxes.

The group of speleologists Underland, led by Massimo Pozzo (former discoverer of the caves of Bueno Fonteno on the Sebino bergamasco), has been exploring the 'omber', caves and underground cavities of Serle (Brescia, Italy) for four years, with a clear objective: to find water for future generations.

This stupendous result was achieved thanks to an innovative study method, which makes it possible to find and locate the waterways by analysing the oscillations of the air flows that can be felt at the entrance to the cavities.

Air is then studied in order to find water, with the help of a measuring device and mathematical formulas, which suggest which entrances are connected to the deepest reticles, and therefore on which caves to concentrate exploratory energies.

However, mapping the entire area will take years of work and, once the reservoirs are found, we will have to figure out how to extract the water from underground and get it to where it is needed.

Lions Clubs Brixia, Colli Morenici, Sirmione and Valsabbia, have already agreed to support the forthcoming study and research activities. An interest that also sees the municipality of Serle (Brescia, Italy) in the front row.

The Cariadeghe plateau is a natural territory located between the Gobbia valley and the Sabbia valley in the province of Brescia. The hills that rise from the plateau are Mount Ucia, Corna de Caì, Dragone and Dragoncello. The plateau is thus delimited by these mountains, which reach an altitude of 1160 m.

The pumping of this blue gold would not only solve the plateau's chronic water problems, but would also allow for a drop-in water source, which would result in significant savings in terms of both money and raw materials.

A total of 120 caves have been found under the plateau, but only four of these have access to the 'deep system', which runs for more than 15 km of tunnels and underground passages: the maximum depth reached is 430 metres.
